Sunflower

They settled a house of sticks

at the end of a dirt road.

She would come on Tuesday’s

to help with the laundry.

Her sunflower eyes came alive

when she laughed from her belly.

They were fed a fine dinner

with white linen on the porch.

From the dining room

they could not be heard,

aside from a raised whisper.

Bell jars filled with sweet tea

eased the sweltering heat

where he raked leaves

beneath  the giant China Berry.

Sunflower said he drank

their  money away with the

little ones in need of shoes.

She secreted money in her apron

 pocket whispering “don’t tell”.

Autumn fell in brown and gold,

like skin and teeth, the scent of

smoke filled the countryside.

That fall they found him suspended

like an October leaf,

hands covered with calluses;

they don’t hurt anymore.

  1. Your words are so very vividly descriptive in this poem. I felt like I was there! Not only a wonderful poet, but one who bring stories alive! It is wonderful to embrace and read! Have a wonderful week ahead Hollie!
