Winter Song

The sun has lost it’s domain,

waves of snow birds shroud its light.

A handful of starlings quiver on bare branches

tiny in their fixed feathers,

they could fit into the

 palm of a hand.

Their fragile song  suspended

in frozen breath,

they sing for the reach of an outstretched hand

clinging to a red-tailed kite

above a field of sunflower faces

or wildflowers in full bloom.

  1. Such beautiful words and together with the song it is like the dance of snowflakes. It started snowing last night for the first time this season and I had to admit it looked beautiful. I love the peaceful atmosphere about the snowfall.

  2. It’s supposed to be -27 and then -10 then -3 here until next Wednesday. I’m hopping they are wrong. Your poem is lovely. I don’t like winter temps. Not at all. We have had 2 nice days, in the 30s and even hit 40 yesterday. Yesterday the kids were walking outside without coats, it felt so warm after the first freezing cold weather. Now it’s coming back.

    • Hi Gigi, wow, that is incredibly cold weather. It stormed like hell here, we had a tornado alert issued, it all blew through around one pm and the sun came out and now it’s lovely. We will be in the 60’s the next few days till next Tuesday when a cold front will hit, plunging us down into the low 40s. Thank you for your lovely comment! Bundle up, bring out the hot cocoa, and stay warm!

  3. So beautiful dear Holly… I love the idea of the bird´s fragile song suspended in frozen breath,… powerful metaphors, my friend…
On another subject, would you mind telling me which is your Family Name… I´d love to add a widget from my blog to yours so wanted to ask you that… If you are better with just `Holly´… Holly it will be…
    Sending hugs. Aquileana 🌹
