The scent of musk and damp fungi permeate the thick forest floor. Dense canopies of emerald rise above, a shelter from the sugary sun that lights a vast sky above the jade mountains. Fox and squirrel and all living creatures flee in clusters the sound of demolition. Monster metal and shrill saws unhinge silk strands of unripe chrysalis dislodging its pupa before it can fly. The forest floor is a barren desert, the stream an ocean of the dead. Tears of dew soak the still wings of monarchs no longer distinguishable among the dried leaves.
